FACILITIES / ACTIVITIES

The nursery has 4 main allocated areas,

Baby Unit

The baby unit has a play area and a separate sleep room with door supervision panels, allowing the staff to observe babies sleeping. It has a changing room, milk kitchen and storage for high chairs, etc.

The babies routine will accommodate parental preference relating to the individual baby’s needs including nutrition, sleeping and any special requirements. The baby room cares for children between the ages of 3 to 12 months.

Toddler Unit

The toddler unit is adjacent to the baby room, so allowing the older babies to have flexibility in enjoying the toddler room’s planned activities.

The unit is divided into 2 rooms, thus providing activities such as role play, a drawing and painting area, a quiet / reading area and a sleep room. It also has a changing room and an exit to the outdoor play area.

The toddler unit cares for children between the ages of 12 months to approximately 24 months, depending on the ability of the individual child. A planned activity programme based on the seasons of the year and play routines is provided. Play and the child’s own motivation are essential to learning.

Pre-school Room

This room is a large open plan activity room for children aged 2 to 5 years. Within this pre-school environment, the children are able to participate in a wide variety of learning processes based on play activities.

It has a well planned pre-school educational curriculum. The curriculum that is set by the nursery for the foundation stage will underpin all future learning by supporting, fostering and promoting the child’s development. The early year’s curriculum is all about the child. Well structured and purposeful play activities enhance and extend a child’s learning.

The nursery’s planned curriculum sets out areas of learning and experiences and the desirable outcomes within them. These areas of learning are integrated and overlap areas of experience.

The pre-school curriculum that is set out for the children consists of mathematical experiences, language experiences, creative development, scientific areas and also understanding the world around us. The child’s intellectual, emotional and social learning is also enhanced. Physical development for under fives includes the need to understand the concepts of health, hygiene and safety.

Conwy Day Nursery provides children with a range of experiences to have access to safe and stimulating outdoor play activities.

The proprietor and staff at the nursery constantly ensure that the equipment and resources are of a high quality, which will further enhance creative play, learning and development.

Our winter Early Years Curriculum for the pre-school room children starts on 7th January and continues until 14th March 2008.  The main topics to be covered are:

·        Nutrition / Healthy Eating

·        Winter Birds and Animals

·        The World and Winter Festivals

Our first topic is Nutrition / Healthy Eating.  This subject allows the children to discuss the importance of healthy eating, eating habits and the ‘five-a-day’ rule.  They will be introduced to many new ranges of foods by introducing healthy snack, lunches and tasting new dishes that include fresh fruit and vegetables.  ‘Eat a Rainbow’ makes introducing these important vitamins and minerals fun.  A visit from a community dietician is planned for early February.

Shrove Tuesday, Valentine’s Day and St. David’s Day events are included in this theme.  Again the children will be sampling new dishes and flavours.  This topic is part of the Nursery’s proprietor and cook participating in Conwy County’s ‘Tiny Tums Nutritional Course’.

Topic number two is all about Winter Birds (especially the Robin), Animals and Hibernation.  The children will be making displays of penguins, polar bears and robins.  They will also be learning about migrating and hibernation and a visit is arranged for the children to visit RSPB in Llandudno Junction to see the variety of birds.

The third topic, The World and Winter Festivals’ allows the children to discuss some of the earth’s major countries, global weather conditions, winter holidays and Chinese New Year.  They will be making winter and weather books, having discussions about Jack Frost and the children will be involved in a lot of science-based experiments – sinking, floating, mixing colours and making lots of crafts.

The nursery will be decorated with the children’s own winter decorations and in addition to our Nutrition theme, the children will again be tasting foods from around the world (Chinese, Italian, Indian, etc.), discussions and cooking sessions will be held during Shrove Tuesday, Valentine’s Day and St. David’s Day.

Our spring Early Years Curriculum will start from Monday 17th March until mid June.  Further information will be available from the beginning of March.

The nursery has its own mini-bus and is able to collect 3 year old children from the local schools. These children attend school on a part-time basis and these arrangements are put in place to encourage a smooth transition for the child from nursery care to attending school full-time at the age of 4.
